Yule wrong on two counts – Letter to HB Today

I have to disagree with Mayor Yule on two points that he reportedly made in his presentation to Federated Farmers (We must consider climate change: Yule 8/5/14) recently. Firstly there is overwhelming scientific consensus that human induced climate change is happening. Therefore, that climate change is happening is not open for debate and should not form the basis for the discussion on how we deal with climate change, a discussion which I agree needs to happen.

World drySecondly it is not unrealistic for the public to have an expectation that our rivers and lakes are safe to swim in. For the government to suggest that our rivers and lakes should only be safe to stand in implies that it is not the environment movement that has a ‘strong hold’ on this issue but the polluters. I am aware that Mayor Yule was speaking to a particular audience so can only hope that his comments were taken out of context.
