Buy Local – Letter to HB Today

The thing I find staggering about this governments decision to have the Tokelau Ferry built in Bangladesh instead of New Zealand (Boatbuilders angry at offshore ferry deal 14/1/14) is that a local manufacturer claims the ferry could be built for $14-15 million whereas Steven Joyce claims on National Radio it could be built for no less than $22 million. I don’t know about you, but I would guess that a boat builder has a much better idea than a minister of the crown of the cost of a project they have tendered to build . MFAT’s decision is yet another nail in the coffin for local manufacturing and is indicative of this governments thinking which seems to support it’s offshore big business mates instead of the engine room of New Zealand’s economy – locally owned SMEs.
