Not such a rosy picture – Letter to Editor HB Today

Kevin Rose has challenged me to find any negatives from what he saw during his visit to an idyllic dairy farm on the Ruataniwhia Plains. I challenge him to find the positives in what he didn’t see, such as nitrogen leaching into the Ruataniwhia aquifer and/or migrating to the Tukituki river, and cadmium accumulation. Here’s a heads up Mr Rose, you can’t see nitrogen leaching, or cadmium accumulation, as they happen to take place underground! I can’t help but feel we have a real disconnect in the leadership of the Regional Council when the chairman of the environment and services committee does not understand the consequences of non point discharges. The issues around nitrogen and cadmium are not solved by any amount of riparian planting or the size of effluent ponds and for Mr Rose to suggest that because he can’t see a problem then there isn’t one is nothing short of disingenuous.
